Shirley Mae Jones is an American actress and singer. She is an Academy Award winner for her role as a vengeful prostitute in Elmer Gantry in 1960. She is best known for her wholesome characters in several musical films, such as Oklahoma! and the television series The Partridge Family.
Jones was born on March 31, 1934, and started singing in her church choir at the age of six.
Her first acting performance was on the stage of South Pacific, following her performance was cast to take the lead in the Broadway show, Chicago. She landed her first feature film in 1955, she was usually stereotyped as a kind and wholesome character but in 1960 she acted as a prostitute in the film Elmer Gantry.
In 1970, she starred as Shirley Partridge in the musical sitcom The Partridge Family and it aired until 1974. The song, “I Think I Love You” from the show reached No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100.
Jones has worked with several artists over the years, including Gene Kelly, Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra, and Dean Martin.
